not in exact order, but generally correct. First 3 and last 3 for sure. Feel like i'm missing one, but he did not play 'narrow escape'...bc the harmonica did not come out until Horses. Great to see Ray solo, talkative and in such a great venue. Similar 'ray-speak' has been reported, but i was surprised when he started discussing Abbey Road studio (Fuck man, i'm just getting fucking comfortable and now we have to move?...its too fucking white) and Lucinda Williams rowdy fans (this other dickhead jumps onstage and takes a picture...fuck). First time i've heard him swear so casually. Anyway - great show. Decent crowd.

Just wanted to give a quick recap for the curious folks. Show was great, as expected. Had excellent seats, which made it even more enjoyable. Ray was in good spirits, and made fun of the constant "We love you, Ray!" outcries by making light of them. Fair amount of banter between songs, actually, which is not your standard fare for him. Generally a respectful crowd, with a couple minor whistles and whoops at inappropriate times. He took the stage at just about 9, played until 10:15, came back for first encore a moment later, left and came back for the second encore to wrap up by 10:30. Was hoping for a bit longer, but it's quality not quantity, I guess.
Here is the list from memory, not necessarily in order:
Achin' Sarah Jolene Loretta (townes van zandt) Hold you Empty Let it be me Winter birds Narrow escape Shelter To love somebody (bee gees) Best thing (original version) Fruits of my labor (lucinda williams) Burn
E1: Trouble E2: Wild horses
Got the "Mr. Ray" shirt, too

The original kicks the crap out of the studio version...IMO of course.

That's great. Wish they'd re-release Gossip In The Grain with his acoustic version replacing the album version.

This summed it up pretty well. You're right that people started getting a bit more obnoxious as the night went on, but I think we sadly have to accept that this is where Ray's audience has gone. Just walking around the show last night, I was amazed at the audience's make up now as compared to when I saw him play in Philly 4 years ago or so.
I think Ray may have somewhat come to terms with the inevitable rowdiness of some of his crowds, and that has allowed him to open up a bit more. In the past, he seemed much more easily rattled by the assholes; now he just seems to either ignore them or call them out (like he did before "You are the best thing").
Overall, good show. Not the best I've seen of him, but certainly nice to hear him stripped down because, let's face it, all he needs is his voice and a guitar.

Made the trip up to Philly for the show last night… I was expecting the worst from the crowd (no offense Philly people – but who are we kidding?) – but things went smoothly for the most part. For the first half of the show Ray really seemed like an artist who hit his stride and was finally ready to step into the spotlight – after a technical error and an increase in the drunken heckling he pulled back a little – but I think he finished strong. Below is the set-list and some comments (the order might be a little mixed up in the middle)
1. Achin’ All the Time - so glad that he played this instead of Be Here Now – it was the first time I have seen this played live and he put a lot of soul into – surprisingly this is my most played Ray song on my iTunes – considering the album version is quite simple and straight forward. But in the live version he really added something extra – I hope somebody has a recording of it.
2. Sarah – before playing this an audience member yelled out “I love you Ray” - he told her that he loved her too – then she said she loved him more – and he responded “Oh, if you knew how much I loved you , it would freak you the fuck out.” Got to love that sense of humor when it comes out.
3. Jolene – before he played this he spoke for awhile about he and Elvis Costello exchanging e-mails in preparation for a TV special they are doing with Lyle Lovett and John Prine (weird to think of Ray e-mailing) – anyway he basically said that requested that he play this song for the TV show because it is Ray’s “signature song” – and I would have to agree).
4. Loretta (Townes Van Zandt cover) – before playing this he talked some more about playing with Costello, Lovett, and Prine and how they were discussing song writers that influenced them and that they all had Townes in common. This is a great song – one that fits Ray well.
5. Hold you
6. Let it Be Me – probably my favorite song that he plays live these days. Maybe because it is still somewhat new – but I think he plays it with the raw emotion and angst that he used to sing Burn and Jolene with – almost like he actually might start crying while singing it.
7. Narrow Escape – was really glad to hear this because I haven’t heard it in awhile. However, soon after he started playing he stopped because of humming – likely coming from the harmonica connection. The crowd couldn’t hear the humming though – so he thought he might be losing it – asked if we thought you could drink in heaven. He said he hopes, but “only scotch served to you by long legged brunettes.”
8. Empty
9. Shelter – this where the crowd started to go a bit off the deep end and he was noticeably rattled during this song – people just whooping and yelling throughout the song – why? I won’t ever understand.
10. Winter Birds
11. To Love Somebody – mentioned you had wished that he had written this song – and that he started playing in the UK/Europe because they appreciate Nina Simone over there.
12. Best Thing (slow/original version) – he briefly explained that this was the original version of the song but that he changed it for the record but thinks it is better this way - people were really starting to be assholes as he started to play this song – and he had to stop and say “you know, this is really a quiet song.” First time I heard this version and it is undoubtedly better – I still the love the lines from the original, original version from ACL “and it’s the woman in you/that makes me want to be with you for always/always.”
13. Fruits of My Labor (Lucinda Williams cover) – Great song. Maybe the best of the night. Before playing it he said how much he admired Lucinda Williams and how he thought this was the perfect song – both melodically and lyrically. I again must agree – really a lyrical gem of a song. Hope somebody has a recording of this.
14. Burn
Encore
15. Trouble – lately he has been improvising at the end of Trouble and he did again tonight to great effect – really brings the emotion into it and makes you feel the song – Goosebumps type of stuff – “she forgives me”.
16. Horses
All in all a great night. He was in top form, and more importantly - I was so impressed with how well he handled himself. Pick up a Mr. Ray shirt which is the same as the one discussed before but just said “Mr. Ray” instead of “Mr. Ray LaMontagne” – he actually had a couple of new shirts and a tour poster for sale – hopefully the leftovers pop up in his online store after the tour.
